Jíbaro Negro

from Bámbula by Alex "Apolo" Ayala

about

"Jíbaro Negro" is inspired by a 1941 painting by Puerto Rican painter Oscar Colon Delgado. "Jíbaro" describes peasants who live in the mountainous heartland of the island and today serve as folkloric references to Puerto Rico's rural heritage prior to the onslaught of agribusiness and American Empire. Though jíbaros are most often depicted as white or "trigueño" (olive-complexioned or literally wheat- colored), he chose to highlight the island's deep ties to slavery and blackness. The machete that he holds can represent integrity, hard work, and dignity, but is also a symbol of resistance. Throughout the Caribbean, the machete was often the weapon of choice for enslaved peoples and their descendants.
