Las Memorias de las Calles

from Mélange by Kalí Rodriguez-Peña

/

about

This is as close as Kalí gets to declaring sides. This groove is puro Cuba, and his entrance has that laid pack full sound that you can only get by playing a lot in the street. Brass players in New Orleans have that as well. It comes from tradición. But pretty soon at the introduction of the electronics and keyboard, Kalí becomes something else, a modern avatar of an ancient tradition. Kazemde's lyricism and pared down structures ensure the piece is balanced between tradition, modernism, and style. The synth comes in at the end and it is all at once, a parade down Havana's Malecón by way of Amsterdam Avenue and set both 30 years ago and 30 years from now.
