"David Bowie’s “Life on Mars” is a surreal daydream of a girl who feels lost and at odds with her surroundings.The idea for this arrangement came to me by singing the verses and chopping out the space between phrases.The lyrics sit so nicely in that asymmetric rhythm. For the fantasy of this song to be fully explored, I knew it had to be an epic journey from start to finish, so I continued to use this method of chopping up the memorable melodies of the song and playing with the parameters of harmony, rhythm, and style. Having Rich and Nir trade over the solo section was something we decided to do in the studio, and it’s absolutely mind-blowing to hear these two giants go back and forth over the arrangement. It’s a post-modern sci-fi fantasy, baby!" -Marty Isenberg

This is a wonderful album! Dave Douglas is one of my heroes. He's more than a great musician. He has a vision for the music and a feeling for putting together a group which is unique. So, beside Joey Baron (another heavyweight and one of my absolute favourite drummers) he invited some young cats to this session. They play just great and make sure that this music sounds totally fresh, whilst at the same time being deeply rooted in the jazz tradition.
