A very witty and quintessentially Cuban reworking of this beloved standard without every devolving into what Hueso called "Turbo" Jazz. It is rather an interesting of an important composition every jazz student must learn but reworked through the prisms of a master arranger. Gabriel plays beautifully here employing many textures and techniques. Here is it that you can see Kalí playing with true Cuban rhythmic deftness, but translucent harmonic command as is expected of someone who doesn't value one world over the other. The end is pure groove and magic.

This could’ve been my album of the year if I’d noticed it. Hell. 2020, feeling like shit and then this musical balm appears. Live recording on one mic. Just bass and harp. Awesome. It swings like a pendulum do! Big shout out for Dezron’s love of coffee. I now have 2 of his albums and he’s proselytising on behalf of coffee on both. Damn right ☕️

This is a wonderful album! Dave Douglas is one of my heroes. He's more than a great musician. He has a vision for the music and a feeling for putting together a group which is unique. So, beside Joey Baron (another heavyweight and one of my absolute favourite drummers) he invited some young cats to this session. They play just great and make sure that this music sounds totally fresh, whilst at the same time being deeply rooted in the jazz tradition.
