written when my girlfriend asked me to compose something for a short film she was making for the ES Disability Film Challenge. One of the actors, Toni, is autistic and non-verbal. She communicates by typing on a laminated printout of a qwerty keyboard. At a brainstorming session for the short film she said: “It’s really important, that people understand, that people like me, love the same.” Johnny, another non-verbal actor in the movie had this quote: “At the end of the day, no matter who you chose, I will always love you.” I used these two quote as lyrics for the melody and harmony of “Love the Same”. I originally recorded it for the film at home using my keyboard, a bass patch and my saxophone recorded into Logic Pro. The melody stuck with me for months after and I had to record it with the full group on Inner Light. It’s fairly simple in contrast to my other compositions but there is a positivity that I think shines through. I feel that positivity when I am around people in this community of special people and witness how happy and full of joy they are.

Yes,yes,yes! I've been waiting for Dave to do this again...two brilliant runs by DDQ and Keystone were documented on Greenleaf back in the day; they were groundbreaking...recorded and released within 24 hours for each set...they were stellar performances and I play them again and again. With absolutely no chance of ever being there, this is the closest i'll ever be to 'being there'...so excited I may need to lay down in a darkened room for a while!
