"Elliott Smith’s “Needle in the Hay” is a dark and tragic song about addiction and other themes around feeling outcast. In The Royal Tenenbaums, this song is played in an iconic scene in which Luke Wilson’s character is shaving off his beard and preparing to
kill himself. Tragically, Elliott Smith took his own life, so the emotional impact of this scene has many layers to it.
My arrangement of this piece is a meditation on grief and loss. I begin by setting the iconic guitar riff on the double bass where the low frequencies and slower tempo add a dark weight to the already haunting lyrics.The instruments enter one at a time as if joining in a dirge or funeral column. Rather than the typical jazz format of soloing over the changes, The piece develops into newly composed instrumental sections exploring the sonic world of grief before eventually recapitulating the original Elliott Smith melody at a faster, angrier tempo." -Marty Isenberg

This is a wonderful album! Dave Douglas is one of my heroes. He's more than a great musician. He has a vision for the music and a feeling for putting together a group which is unique. So, beside Joey Baron (another heavyweight and one of my absolute favourite drummers) he invited some young cats to this session. They play just great and make sure that this music sounds totally fresh, whilst at the same time being deeply rooted in the jazz tradition.
