"In contrast to the heaviness of “Needle In the Hay,” my arrangement of Rebel Rebel is pure camp. In Mr. Anderson’s film The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou, the soundtrack consists of David Bowie songs that are sung in Portuguese by Seu Jorge. To come up with my own bossa nova arrangement of a Bowie song, I turned to one of my favorite composers for inspiration: Gary McFarland. McFarland is a lesser-known jazz composer and arranger who rose to prominence in the 1960s. His original music albums, such as America the Beautiful: An Account of Its Disappearance, are extraordinary works of art, but he also made these incredibly campy bossa nova records in the mid-60s. They border on “elevator music,” and yet they are so hip! They crack me up, and then out of nowhere, something unexpectedly beautiful will happen. I attempted to channel McFarland’s style for this arrangement with a modern twist. Sasha Berliner brought such a refreshing and poignant approach to this arrangement. I think we struck the perfect balance between camp and hipness." -Marty Isenberg

i was at 2 of these shows and they were a highlight of the year for me, so glad to see this music released -- the interplay is incredible and the interpretations are so fresh. the recording quality is excellent as well. e123
This is a wonderful album! Dave Douglas is one of my heroes. He's more than a great musician. He has a vision for the music and a feeling for putting together a group which is unique. So, beside Joey Baron (another heavyweight and one of my absolute favourite drummers) he invited some young cats to this session. They play just great and make sure that this music sounds totally fresh, whilst at the same time being deeply rooted in the jazz tradition. Florian Arbenz
