about

"This is a song by the Velvet Underground that I have spent a lot of time with, so it is fitting that it’s the first song on my album. The feature that captivated my attention about this song from my very first listen is the sweet and melancholy counterpoint between the violin and glockenspiel. It’s a layer that exists underneath the cool vocals of Lou Reed,
but it has this hopeful innocence to it, contrasting the lyrics about a woman who feels like she wasted her life. My arrangement starts by bringing these inner voices to the forefront unobscured by any vocal melody. By transposing these melodic ideas to harpsichord, mandolin, and clarinet, the piece is winking at Mark Mothersbaugh’s cinematic scoring and places the listener into the sonic world of this album. When the band enters, we seek to explore the emotional landscape of the piece through modern jazz language and improvisation." -Marty Isenberg
