about

"Another song that has long been one of my favorites. The original recording by the Zombies is mostly an unaccompanied vocal. It is a short, intimate song about unrequited love with a gorgeously haunting melody. This song has always resonated very personally to me, and I think it is another great metaphor for the queer experience. Not only in the hesitation to tell someone how you feel about them, but in the space of living with feelings unexpressed. Negotiating with yourself about how much to share, and dreaming of a world in which you are free. My arrangement begins with an orchestrally cinematic setting of the melody sung heart-wrenchingly by Sami Stevens. The introduction evokes a romantic Christmas, with the warm sounds of a French horn choir, and the tinkling of jingle bells. Then suddenly the hopeful fantasy is torn away and the melody is re-harmonized in a minor key to illuminate the melancholy of a secret life." Marty Isenberg

lyrics

Should I try to hide
The way I feel inside
My heart for you?
Would you say that you
Would try to love me too?
In your mind
Could you ever be
Really close to me?
I can tell the way you smile
If I feel that I
Could be certain then
I would say the things I want to say tonight
But 'til I can see
That you'd really care for me
I will dream
That someday you'll be
Really close to me
I can tell the way you smile
If I feel that I
Could be certain then
I would say the things I want to say tonight
But 'til I can see
That you'd really care for me
I'll keep trying to hide
The way I feel inside
